Water Baptism Q & A, 6 of 15

Biblical Answers
to Commonly Asked Questions On Water Baptism

Mode of Water Baptism continued:
Question 15: Why is the mode of Water Baptism important?
Answer: Symbols teach. The proper mode of Water Baptism (i.e. immersion) teaches the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:4); plus, Water Baptism is the believer’s testimony that he/she is identifying with these things. Moreover, it is the believers “first resurrection” (see John 5:25
and Romans 6:4).
John 5:25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

FORMULA OF WATER BAPTISM
Question 16: What is meant by the
Formula of Water Baptism?
Answer: The formula of Water Baptism is the word or words invoked over (or upon) the person being baptized, by the person doing the baptizing. See Acts 19:3
where the question, “Unto what were you baptized?” has the formula (and not the mode) in view.

Question 17: Is Water Baptism administered in any particular formula in the New Testament?
Answer: the New Testament is clear as to the formula used in Water Baptism. Notice the following facts:
1. In Acts 2:38 alien sinners were commanded to be Water Baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. That day about 3000 persons obeyed the command.
Ac 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2. In
Acts 8:12, 16 we read of Philip administering Water Baptism “into” the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ac 8:12,16 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. ... 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

3. In
Acts 10:47-48
Peter commands the entire household of Cornelius to be Water Baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 10:47-48 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. ...

4. In Acts 19:1-5 Luke records the re-baptism of 12 disciples of John the Baptist. This re-baptism was administered in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:1-5 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
5. In First Corinthians 1:13  Paul indicates that the Corinthians were Water Baptized into the name of the ONE who was crucified for them; namely, the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 1:13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

6. In Acts 22:16 Ananias instructs Saul of Tarsus (later to become Paul the apostle) to get his sins washed away by calling upon the name of the Lord in Water Baptism.
Ac 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

7. In James 2:7  the brother of our Lord writes of the name which was called upon the believers at one particular time that produced a finished result. The Greek of this text (the verb “called” is epiklēthev “having been called upon” is ariost tense—a one time calling, which produces results that continues) implies that name to be, Jesus. Therefore, the Amplified Bible recognizes this name to be the name of Christ invoked at Water Baptism.
James 2:7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called? James 2:7 Amplified Bible: Is it not they who slander and blaspheme that precious name by which you are distinguished and called [the name of Christ invoked in baptism]?
