Water Baptism Q & A, 4 of 15

Biblical Answers
to Commonly Asked Questions On Water Baptism

Question 8: Since the Bible teaches different types of baptism, (Water, Spirit, Fire [judgment] and Suffering) how does one determine which type of baptism any given passage has in view?
Answer: Most likely the passage will be specific, but if not, one must look to the context itself. Since Water Baptism is the most common and primary meaning of the word baptidzo (see Question 1) one should always understand baptism to be Water Baptism unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

Question 9: What does Water Baptism signify?
Answer:

Water Baptism is the initiation into the Christian faith.

It also places the believer “into Christ” (Galatians 3:27, For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ).

The apostle Paul calls Water Baptism the “burial” of the old man (Romans 6:4, Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life ).

Paul, further refers to the Water Baptism as a “planting together in the likeness of his death” (Romans 6:5, For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: (KJV)).

Moreover, it signifies the death, burial and resurrection of Christ (Romans 6:4, Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. First Corinthians 15:1-4, Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:).
Eph 5:26,  that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, Acts 2:38, Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 22:16, And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
