Water Baptism Q & A, 3 of 15

Biblical Answers
to Commonly Asked Questions On Water Baptism

Question 6: Does the Bible teach of other baptisms, apart from Water Baptism?
Answer: Apart from Water Baptism, the Bible speaks of the Baptism of Fire (Matthew 3:11, I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.)
; the Baptism of the Spirit (Matthew 3:11, I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.);  Acts 1:5, and the Baptism of Suffering (Matthew 20:22, But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.  And Mark 10:38, But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”). Also, see Hebrews 6:2 where we read of the doctrine of baptisms (plural): ... of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Question 7: Since the Bible teaches a plurality of baptisms (Question 6), what is meant by the “one baptism” of the Ephesians 4:5, ...one Lord, one faith, one baptism?
Answer: Paul is instructing the Ephesians—that in regard to water—there is but one baptism allowed. This is because the founding members of the Ephesian church had been previously water baptized into the baptism of John the Baptist, and then re-baptized at the hands of Paul (see Acts 19:1-7 also Questions 41 through 46). Paul is reminding the Ephesians that the Water Baptism he administered unto them was the only Water Baptism recognized by the Lord’s church.

Ac 19:1-7 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
